Pet dander floats for hours and cat/dog allergens bind to soft surfaces. Here is which Levoit model and filter combination actually helps — and what it cannot do.
Bedroom with one cat or small dog
Core 300 + Pet Allergy filter (~$80-100 total). 219 sq ft coverage, 24 dB sleep, dedicated pet odor carbon layer.
Living room / multi-pet household
Core 400S (~$120-150). 403 sq ft coverage, PM2.5 auto mode, larger CADR for faster dander clearance.
Pet dander — the real allergy trigger — consists of microscopic flakes of skin protein, not hair. Cat dander (Fel d 1) particles are as small as 2.5 µm and remain airborne for hours in a still room. Dog dander (Can f 1) is similar. Both are well within the capture range of True HEPA filtration, which removes 99.97% of particles 0.3 µm and larger.
Ionic purifiers and "HEPA-type" filters (a marketing term for filters that don't meet the 99.97% standard) are inadequate for pet allergies. Levoit's Core series uses certified True HEPA filters — not HEPA-type.
The activated carbon layer in Levoit pet filters addresses a separate problem: pet VOCs. Cat urine and dog smell involve ketones and sulfur compounds that HEPA cannot capture — only activated carbon adsorption removes these. The dedicated Pet Allergy filter has a thicker, denser carbon bed than the standard filter.

The Core 300 with Pet Allergy filter (B0BG5CPJK8) is the best value. At 24 dB sleep mode it runs all night next to the bed without disruption. The pet filter's thicker carbon effectively reduces morning cat smell after a night with the bedroom door closed.
Core 300 — See on Amazon →The Core 400S with its auto mode is ideal for dog households. Dogs shed hair and dander at higher volumes than cats — the PM2.5 sensor will detect dander bursts (shaking, rough play) and automatically ramp up before you notice the air quality drop. The larger CADR (230 CFM) clears the room faster after high-activity periods.
Core 400S — See on Amazon →Use the Core 300 + Pet Allergy filter placed within 5-6 feet of the litter box — proximity matters far more than raw CADR for odor control. Keep a second standard Core 300 or Core 200S running in the main living area for dander coverage. Two smaller units beat one large unit for localized odor management.
Levoit offers several filter variants for the Core 300 — the choice of filter matters as much as the model itself for pet households.
| Filter | Best For | ASIN |
|---|---|---|
| Pet Allergy | Cat/dog dander + odor (most pet owners) | B0BG5CPJK8 |
| Standard (default) | General air quality, light pet use | B07X9VCNQ1 |
| Toxin Absorber | Heavy VOCs (cleaning products, paint near pets) | B099HYY2NY |
Pet Allergy filter fits Core 300 only. Core 400S uses its own filter cartridge (B08Z9VGSYT) — no pet-specific variant, standard carbon layer handles mild pet odors.
"Have 3 cats and always had guests comment on the smell. Got two Core 300s with pet filters — one in the main living area, one near the litter box. The difference was immediate. Guests stopped noticing within the first week."

"Golden Retriever sheds constantly. The Core 400S on auto mode is surprisingly reactive — I can watch the PM2.5 number jump when he shakes and the unit ramps up automatically. Air quality display is a nice bonus."

"I have a cat allergy but also have two cats (it's complicated). The Core 300 in my bedroom with the pet allergy filter has genuinely helped me sleep without antihistamines most nights. Changed filters every 4 months."

Core 300 + Pet Allergy filter for rooms under 220 sq ft. Core 400S for larger rooms or multi-pet households — it has a PM2.5 sensor that auto-adjusts when dander levels spike.
Not primarily — pet hair is too large and heavy to stay airborne long. Air purifiers capture airborne dander and allergens. Pet hair on surfaces must be vacuumed. The pre-filter on Levoit units does capture some floating hair, but floor vacuuming remains essential.
Yes — it reduces airborne allergen concentration significantly. Most allergy sufferers report symptom improvement with a True HEPA unit running continuously. It works best combined with regular vacuuming and washing pet bedding, since allergens also settle on surfaces.
Every 4-5 months for households with pets, versus the standard 6-8 months. Pet dander and hair clog the pre-filter faster. Clean the outer mesh every 2-4 weeks with a vacuum attachment to extend life.
